Bad idea. When you need RoF and WoH, it's usually because target is low on health (at least with WoH). To press either of the mouse buttons, you have to lift your palm a bit, bend your hand and then press it. You just need better reflexes with normal 1-8.

Or... Remap keys to move with SXZC and use 1-4 and QWER to activate skills. Not my idea, I don't use it, but it's nice.

That's not true at all.
Not everyone holds their mouse the same way you do.
I have my thumb constantly on the two side buttons
(I need to bend my thumb slightly to press the lower button, but it requires much less movement than pressing a key on the keyboard would...)
I also have my middle finger over three buttons at the center of my mouse
...which again takes less movement to click than pressing a keyboard button.

I do prefer things like WoH and RoF to be on my keyboard though.

Back on the OP, I would say learning the visual effects is very important for a new monk. Look at the activation for knockdowns/hexes etc.

1: Even three pure healers boon monks are useless against insta gib spikes since you can' t heal a dead player. Practice with protection bars or hybrids.

2: In PVE, use mind bender whenever possible because even 1/4 of a second takes forever if the going gets rough.

3:If you go PVP, expect to spend most of the time on the floor unless you sacrifice attributes for balanced stance. You can also use supportive spirit combined with diciples armor to absorb damage but don't let anyone know you use it because it's too unconventional.

4:If someone runs far out of your range to die, it's his fault.

5:Glimmer of light goes trough daze most of the time.

6: Dont use a shield in pve. The monsters aren't that smart.

7:I like a 16 DF, 13 HP setup based on Unyielding aura for PVE since it's makes the most of the best pve skill ever: Seed of life.

8:Holy veil is overrated because it can only remove one hex at a time. You need all the energy you can get.

9: A terrible pug is the perfect place to become a better monk.

I highly doubt your new monk would actually have access to it, considering it's a GWEN PvE-skill in the Asura land, and I would hope the monking has improved somewhat by that point. Besides, wouldn't it be more worthwhile to use a 40/40 in the first place?

Patient Spirit would be my choice when dazed, since it heals more and doesn't take up my elite slot.
(There's a slight delay on the actual heal but I've never found it to be a problem. Planning ahead is good.) =P

Mostly I just disagree with you on Holy Veil.
If you learn to use it properly it's one of the best hex removal skills there is.
If you preveil, you can often remove the most threatening hex from an incoming hex stack, before any cover hexes are even finished casting...

I mostly play RA IF i ever feel like pvping. I like to have a style of my own too much to bother with "conform or die"- high end pvp. My dislike for HV is purely subjective. It's just not my style.

AI doesnt target you as much if you use a martial weapon + shield...not to mention learning to monk with low energy is good...

Yep, they cast stuff like empathy and blind you while you use a sword+shield.

As for instagib spikes you can save them with infuse (unless the target dies in 1 hit) just watch the mobs hitting.

As a rule of thumb, in HM I always bring prot spirit on my bar, it doesn't need a large investment in protection prayers to be effective so you can still run it on a HB bar.

A terrible pug doesn't make you a better monk, they don't take pressure off you and you're going to suck when you get hexstacked.

I wish all the monks i teamed with had worked ^ that ^ out.... Frustrating as hell! even if it is just something im doin to kill time! Power healing only goes So far..semi braindead use of ps is better than a full 8 slots of redbar.

The 2 reasons Holy Veil is kickass is because 1) it causes hexes that target you to have double the cast time, and 2) it removes a hex when you stop maintaining it.

Since decent players will cover their important hexes, you waste a ton of their time on a double-cast time hex or two (and if you are communicating with your team, they will know you are using Veil, and are more likely to interrupt said nastiness anyways), and while they are in the middle of trying to cast the cover-hex (and Holy Veil has already triggered the double cast time for the cover hex) you stop maintaining HV to remove the first (important, uber-nasty) hex.

RE #2 doesnt trigger the hit of damage from backfire/vor when you cancel it, and will more than likely already be recharged ready to quickly pull off another. 2 rapid fire hex removals is win! Same kinda deal why PwK is soo good! preveiling & pre potting(if thats even a term :P)

Thanks,
Consider yourself gladly ignored because it's more important to have a playstyle you actually enjoy then using the one mandatory meta build.Always. It's still a game, not an extreme sport.

ignore me all you want, it still does not change the fact that 90% of what you gave out as "advice" was complete and utter bullshit or terribly the wrong "advice" to be giving to someone who is starting out as a monk...

Competitive pvp says hi. There is a reason meta builds are meta. Because they are OP and the best options you can run..generally. Due to how the skills are balanced and tier'd.

If you wanna win, its more important to run a good bar that works! wether you personally think its your style or not..

Snowflake vs cookie

I am sorry but I take issue with your "unique little snowflake" philosophy. Yichi was absolutely correct, if a little rude.

A monk's job, plain & simple, is to keep his party alive as well as able to function (by removing key conditions & hexes, healing, preventing damage through protting etc). This is a very unforgiving job which requires a LOT of player skill. In addition to skill, it also requires the use of builds which are best equipped to handle whatever is the most prevalent offense in the current meta.

Therefore, monks HAVE TO USE THE ONE META BUILD. NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU THINK. IF YOU WANT TO BE A GOOD MONK, STFU AND RUN THE BUILD THAT IS REQUIRED.

Ty.

IF YOU WANT TO BE A GOOD MONK,MAKE SHURE YOU PARTY DOESNT DIE. IF YOU CAN DO IT WITH A CUSTOM BUILD, THATS JUST FINE! DO YOUR OWN THING AND LET THE PROS WHINE ALL THEY WANT.

That's what i do. I get 10 win streaks in RA on a daily basis just because i use a build i like. I love RA. No one can kick you for being different from the meta and they stop complaining when the wins rack up. I would have quitted this game ages ago if i had to use the exact same build all the time.

Isn't this the PVE board btw?

(I do appoligise for dissing HV tough, it can have uses as long as you don't have to keep it up at all times)

BUT, whatever you do: Don't torture yourself in pve by using a shield. If you need it to negate damage you are doing something very wrong. Like being in the front line or failing to kite. Use that extra energy to keep the tank alive ten seconds longer wich is forever on HM.
